Outdoor Mosaics Workshop
Outdoor Mosaics Workshop
Learn the art of mosaic design and practice the skills needed to make a mosaic that can live outdoors. In this class you will learn the difference between an indoor and outdoor mosaic and will be introduced to the materials best suited for an outdoor piece. Emma’s extensive knowledge and experience in teaching mosaic (and crochet but that’s for another time!) make this the perfect class for beginners and for those wishing to expand their mosaic knowledge. When we think of mosaic we often associate them with being outdoors but if you don’t know what you are doing all your hard work can be undone when the frost and rain compromise the stability of your mosaic and loosen your tiles. Once this happens its only a matter of time before your mosaic falls apart….happily there is a solution and this class will teach you everything you need to know to ensure that the garden table you have always wanted to mosaic can live a long and happy life outside!
What does the session consist of?
You are met with a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake to allow you time to ‘arrive’ and settle in.
This workshop will mainly focus on mosaic onto mesh and there will be a variety of templates and ideas to choose from or you can bring along your own design and Emma will help you to achieve your vision. You will draw your design (don’t panic Emma can help!) and then prepare your mesh board before beginning the fun bit (although we think its all fun!!!) You will be guided every step of the way as you master the art of cutting and nibbling glass and ceramic tiles whilst learning all the expert hints and tips for creating beautiful mosaics every time.
There will be an opportunity in the afternoon to work a small sample using cement adhesive onto a weather proof backing board so that you can compare and contrast the different methods.
Do I need to bring anything?
Yes you will need to bring along a piece of stiff board that will be used as the base for your mosaic to rest on. It needs to be flat and sturdy - A tea tray, piece of wood or even a side from a cardboard box will suffice (no creases though). Your base needs to be roughly 40cm x 40cm
All materials and tools are provided and you will leave with a completed mosaic together with the additional materials needed to fix your piece in the outdoor location of your choosing.
Tea, coffee and cake are supplied throughout and participants are invited to bring a packed lunch for a 30-45 minute break where we get to stretch and take a well earned breather before diving back in!
